AnemometersAn anemometer is a device for measuring wind speed. Before you invest in a wind turbine, it is very sensible to have some idea of the wind speed at your chosen location. This can be researched from national wind speed databases, but very useful local measurements can be made using an anemometer. This can be a simple hand held device, or quite sophisticated instruments are available which record wind speed data over a long period. You can experiment with different locations to see which yield the best results. Wind speed is always greater the higher you go, so make sure that you get accurate indications by measuring the wind speed at the height you plan to install your turbine, or a near as you can get to it. Measurements over a long period will be much more useful than a few instantaneous readings.
